A Hope That I Carry

I’ve been lying in my bed and thinking
about the day I die
Thought of others and myself and wondered
’bout a life gone by
All the things that I spent my time on
Did it have any value
All the words that I said
And everything I have done
Did it help anybody to manage
Has it been to someone’s advantage
That’s a hope that I carry

There are people who keep very busy
Always walking tall
Some are quieter and take it easy
Feeling rather small
What you do out of love, however
Has a meaning that matters
Other things that you try eventually fade away
Every action of love will remain
True compassion is never in vain
That’s a hope that I carry

When I’m done and when my life is over
I can do no more
And there’s nothing I will be in need of
Like I was before
So the more that I think about it
All the better I see it
On that day there is nothing I can depend upon
But the promise I got from a man
Who was dead but is risen again
That’s a hope that I carry
